Midwives & Mothers in Action

Midwives & Mothers in Action, or MAMA, is a collaborative effort by the National Association of Certified Professional Midwives (NACPM), Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA), , , North American Registry of Midwives (NARM), and the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council to achieve federal recognition of Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs).

These six national consumer advoacte and midwifery organizations came together in the spring of 2009 to advocate for CPMs at the federal level. Over the last few years amazing grassroots action has focused on passing CPM licensing legislation in states across the US. Inspired by forward progress at the state level, and by continued maturation of the profession, the six national partner organizations came together to move the agenda of making CPMs available across the US to the federal level.

The partner organizations have been successfully building alliances, developing support among legislators, and seeking opportunities to influence policy.

The current health care debate provides an important opportunity to communicate with legislators about the skilled quality care provided by CPMs, the cost savings they can provide, and the important role they they provide in offerring skilled birth center and home birth services for expectant families. As such, the MAMA Campaign is working to insure that CPMs are included in any federal health care reform legislation.
